Living Well with Dementia

Recognise Dementia Symptoms & Care For People with Dementia

Understanding Dementia

Dementia is not a single disease, but a general term used to describe a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, decision-making, and communication. While it can be overwhelming, many people with dementia continue to lead meaningful lives, especially when supported by compassionate, informed care.

At OrconeCare, we believe in enabling those with dementia to live comfortably, independently, and joyfully — in the place they know best: their home.

Types of Dementia

Dementia presents in many forms, each affecting individuals differently. The most common types include:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Vascular Dementia
  • Lewy Body Dementia (DLB)
  • Frontotemporal Dementia
  • Parkinson’s Disease Dementia
  • Mixed Dementia
  • Huntington’s Disease
  • Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome
  • Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
  • Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

Although the progression and symptoms vary, early detection and consistent support can help manage the condition more effectively.

Recognising Symptoms of Dementia

Symptoms may develop gradually and differ between individuals, but common signs include:

Cognitive Symptoms

  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty communicating or following conversations
  • Poor judgment and problem-solving
  • Disorientation and confusion
  • Challenges with movement or coordination

Psychological Symptoms

  • Mood swings or increased irritability
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Hallucinations or paranoia
  • Withdrawal from activities
  • Personality changes

If you observe these symptoms in a loved one, we recommend consulting a healthcare professional promptly.

Eating and Drinking with Dementia

Maintaining proper nutrition and hydration is crucial. People with dementia may forget to eat or drink, while others might overeat unknowingly. Here are some simple tips we follow at OrconeCare:

  • Create a calm dining environment: Clear the table and reduce distractions to help focus on eating.
  • Make meals social: Eating together often encourages better appetite and enjoyment.
  • Provide finger foods: Easy-to-grab snacks can encourage independent eating throughout the day.
  • Use adaptive utensils: Padded cutlery and two-handled mugs can make eating more comfortable.
  • Hydrate creatively: Offer watery snacks like watermelon and use one-way straws for ease of drinking.

Living Actively in the Community

Having dementia doesn’t mean giving up social life or hobbies. Many local initiatives now cater specifically to people with dementia:

  • Dementia-friendly cinemas and leisure activities
  • Singing for the Brain sessions hosted by Alzheimer’s Society
  • Dementia cafés — safe, welcoming spaces to connect and seek support

Encouraging outdoor walks, gardening, or light exercise can enhance mood and cognition. OrconeCare CareGivers support clients in enjoying community life safely and confidently.

Meaningful Activities for Dementia Clients

Keeping the mind active is just as important as physical health. Our CareGivers work with families to choose suitable activities such as:

  • Music and memory games
  • Art, puzzles, and crafts
  • Reminiscence conversations
  • Gentle physical exercise and walks
  • Gardening or pet companionship

These activities are designed to be both enjoyable and mentally stimulating.

When to Seek Specialist Dementia Care

As dementia progresses, additional care may become necessary. Home care provides comfort, consistency, and peace of mind. Consider seeking help if:

  • Your loved one struggles with daily eating, drinking, or hygiene
  • Managing medication has become difficult
  • Family carers need support or respite
  • The home environment needs adjustments for safety

At OrconeCare, we provide expert dementia care tailored to your family’s needs.
